The story tells the life of Rodion Raskolnikov, a student in the capital of Imperial Russia, St. Petersburg. This young man sees his dreams truncated by the misery in which he and his family are involved (his mother and sister), misery that forces him to freeze his studies for lack of money. In search of money he gets to know an old and selfish lender, in whose house he commits some valuables.
